ChangeCraft
The Firm

ChangeCraft works with big, old organizations that are proud of their history and of their successes. These companies engage us after they realize that they cannot survive into the future unless they make major changes in the way they do business.

We have created a process that taps a vast, under-utilized resource within these companies: the spirit, intelligence and inventiveness of seasoned employees. The ChangeCraft™ process organizes and mobilizes employees from all ranks – people who know how the game is played and are sick of it. Those employees, working together, see what change is needed. And our process shows them how to make it happen.

We help our clients define a strategy to achieve the transformation they've undertaken. We build and install the unusual skills, techniques and support systems needed to implement the changes they plan. And we provide experienced coaching to the scores of people who must maintain the spirit to change, even in the face of awesome adversity.

We research a company's systems and assess the organizational culture to determine opportunities and barriers to change, as well as to discover hidden needs and problems. We prepare executives to lead transformations. We train the people who organize transformation projects and help build teams to implement change in the company. Once the process has begun, we support the people who are performing the work of transformation. As the change progresses, we continue to learn about the patterns in this complex and paradoxical process so that we can create new, better ways to engage this risky undertaking. We always work ourselves out of a job.

ChangeCraft is a successor to The Hall Wesley Group, a consulting firm that, since 1977, has specialized in the organizational challenges of the publishing, insurance and technology industries.

Over the past 15 years, we have served in transformation projects at Motorola, USA TODAY, Allstate Insurance, Lucent Technologies, The New York Times, South Carolina Electric and Gas, Omaha World-Herald, U.S. Government Printing Office, Dayton Daily News and Congressional Quarterly.

Our Products and Services

Whole System Transformation

Project Design and Implementation. Our specially selected teams of veteran change agents work with organizations to define the transformation desired and -- using ChangeCraft technology -- to custom-build a process that can effectively transform their enterprises. With the goal of working ourselves out of a job, we train employees and teams to implement changes throughout the organization and we provide continuing counsel to both leaders and teams until they are self-sufficient in these responsibilities.

Transformation Process Support

Analysis of Culture and Organization. Given a statement of the changes ordered by the leaders of an enterprise, we interact with a broadly representative sample of employees (5% in large organizations) to learn how the organization and the culture will affect plans for change. We produce a complete report of our findings with an analysis of the culture's impact on the planned change.

Culture Change Design and Implementation. Many organizations have changed their strategies and reengineered their work processes only to find that the company still behaves - and "feels" - very much as it did before the changes were implemented. We help such an organization transform its culture - the heart - so that it is aligned with the head and legs it has reinvented.

Change Process Assessment. For organizations that are implementing transformations on their own -- or with technologies other that those of ChangeCraft -- we examine processes, progress and possibilities to report hidden opportunities, unacknowledged successes, looming hazards, and faulty underpinnings.
