Our values and beliefs light the way for us. We easily see and learn what they
illuminate, but tend to be blind to the truth in their opposites. We offer you this view
into our beliefs so that you can understand both our vision and our ignorance.
We are systems thinkers. We believe that
everything is connected: that changes in small parts of a big system cause the entire
system to adapt.
We believe that the cultures we belong to force us to
see some facts and to find others invisible; that the power of culture is greater than
that of logic or strategies or goals or other structures.
We believe that people's behavior makes sense (even
when we can't figure it out); that each person works within a set of personal values to
advance personal goals and to relieve personal needs.
We believe that the power of large organizations is
derived from their members; that individuals have the freedom to make choices, and that
most of us choose to empower the organizations we join.
We believe that we're responsible for the
consequences of our actions even when we have made no conscious choice about our actions
or their consequences.
We believe that sameness is dullingly dangerous, and
that a healthy environment maintains its diversity.
We believe we never have enough information; that
what we're learning always has more power and potential than what we know.
We believe that -- no matter the power of culture or
hierarchical authority or the world of events beyond our control -- people are the
changers in organizations.
We work with a firm belief that the customer's okay
(though we worry that obsessiveness about customer needs -- at the expense of other
stakeholders -- can throw an organization off balance).
